Can a mechanic work on a car parked on the street outside my house?

Usually, if the car is on a reasonably level surface with room to work without standing in traffic. Controlled parking zones need a permit or legal space for the van, which is for you to sort in advance.

Do I need to be at home during the visit?

Ideally yes, or at least contactable by phone. The mechanic may need access to keys, to ask about symptoms, or to agree extra work with you before continuing.

My car has been sitting for months — where do we start?

Usually with the battery and a general condition check, since that's the most common blocker. Standing cars can also have seized brakes and degraded fluids, which the mechanic will look at while they're there.

Can they work in a communal or underground car park?

Often not. Height restrictions, ventilation and the block's own rules get in the way. If you can move the car outside beforehand, that solves most of it.

What do I pay Rolling Mechanics?

Only our own separate booking and introduction fee, which we quote before you confirm. The mechanic's labour, diagnostics, parts and repair charges are paid directly to them and are not collected by us.

Why an at-home visit works well

There's a practical reason mobile mechanics prefer a driveway to a dual carriageway:

The car is static, safe and out of traffic, so testing can be done unhurried
A level surface makes jacking safe and fluid checks accurate
Cold-start faults can be reproduced properly, which is often impossible at a garage after the car has been driven or towed in
You're there to describe the symptoms and answer questions as they come up
No recovery cost simply to get the car looked at

How booking a mechanic works, and what you pay

Rolling Mechanics is a booking and introduction service, not a repair garage. There are two separate payments and you'll know both before anything is confirmed:

Send us the vehicle, registration, symptoms and location — a map pin from your phone is ideal
We speak to an independent mechanic we know personally and confirm their expected price for the described work
You pay Rolling Mechanics a separate booking and introduction fee to secure the mechanic. It is not a deposit and it is not deducted from the mechanic's bill
The mechanic attends and you pay them directly for their labour, diagnostics, parts and repair work

What we need from you

The registration, make and model, a clear description of what the car is and isn't doing, and where exactly it's parked — driveway, permit bay, communal car park. If you're on a controlled parking street, the mechanic's van needs somewhere legal to stop, and that side of it is yours to arrange. You can share a map pin from your phone so nobody is hunting for the address.

When recovery or a workshop is still needed

Some jobs need a ramp and there's no way around it — clutches, gearboxes, major internal engine work, welding, tyre fitting and wheel alignment. Communal or underground parking can rule a visit out on space, height or permission grounds. And where the fault turns out to be beyond what can be safely completed at the kerbside, the mechanic will tell you plainly and explain what recovery to a workshop would involve rather than leaving the car part-stripped.
