What the mechanic typically assesses
A proper diagnostic visit is more than plugging in a code reader. Expect the mechanic to work through:
- Stored, pending and permanent fault codes across the vehicle's control modules
- Live sensor data while the engine runs, to see how components behave in real conditions
- Freeze-frame data showing the conditions when the fault was recorded
- A visual and physical check of wiring, connectors, hoses and the components the codes point at
- A plain-English explanation of what's wrong, how urgent it is, and what the repair involves
