Common possibilities behind the light
Hundreds of faults can trigger it, so this is a list of common possibilities rather than an answer:
- Oxygen or lambda sensor readings out of expected range
- A loose or faulty fuel cap causing an evaporative emissions fault
- Misfires from worn spark plugs, coil packs or injectors
- Mass airflow sensor faults or an air leak in the intake
- EGR valve or DPF issues, particularly on diesels used mainly for short trips
- Catalytic converter efficiency below threshold
- Turbo boost or vacuum-related faults
- Wiring, connector or earth faults that mimic a failed component
